Edendork ladies produced a superb display of football in Sunday’s Ulster Junior Final to claim the provincial title at the expense of Donegal side Naomh Muire.

Leading from the second minute, the Tyrone champions weathered an early second half storm when the Donegal girls briefly threatened a mini comeback, to win 6-11 to 2-4.

Edendork began well with points from Maeve Maxwell (2) and Louise Mc Caffrey inside the opening five minutes. Nicola Rafferty hit the first goal of the day to put the Tyrone champions 1-4 to no score ahead.

Naomh Muire settled into the game and a Saoirse Bonner penalty followed by points from Tara and Ailbhe O’Donnell brought them back into the contest. However with half time approaching Maeve Maxwell hit her team’s second goal of the game with Kathleen Rafferty also pointing to leave the half time score 2-5 to 1-2 in favour of Edendork.

The Tyrone champions knocked over the first three points of the second half courtesy of Maxwell (2) and Kathleen Rafferty before Naomh Muire hit something of a purple patch. Ailbhe O’Donnell pointed before Erika Hanna hit a goal and a point to leave just four points between the teams.

Just when it looked like the Donegal side were getting back into the match the Edendork girls upped the ante once more. Maxwell pointed before Kathleen Rafferty finished off a superb team move to the net. With twelve minutes remaining that goal knocked the spirit out of the Donegal girls and Edendork went on to add a further three goals and a point to finish comfortable winners and Ulster champions.

No doubt the forwards will take much of the credit but this was a real team display with every player contributing handsomely to the cause. There were many fine scores but Louise Mc Caffrey’s goal five minutes from the end typified all that was good about the Edendork display. The big midfielder chased a ball that everyone thought was heading wide. She managed to keep it in play before calmly finishing to the net and sealed the win and the Ulster title for her team.
