Saturday 13th October Morgan Athletic Grounds Armagh
This Saturday, 13 October, Eglish will play Down champions Ballycran in the Ulster Club Senior B Championship Final in the Morgan Athletic Grounds, Armagh. It has been 21 years since the club was last in an Ulster final and on that occasion they reached the All Ireland Final. A huge amount of coaching and training has taken place over the past two years under the guidance of Jim McCormack from Armagh. His commitment and hard work with the team has been incredible. His decision, along with the girls, to play in the Ulster League (Premier) and in the Derry League has no doubt enhanced the quality of the girls’ performances. Alongside Jim, his son Paul McCormack, Barry Cuddy and Barry Fay have contributed significantly to the coaching and fitness of the senior team.
The future of camogie in Eglish continues to look positive. Over the past few years the club has been coaching approximately 40 girls from ages 5-10. At post primary level the club achieved championship and league success in 2012. At U14 the girls were successful championship winners and had the privilege of representing Tyrone at Feile 2012 in Dublin during the summer. At this memorable event the club was rewarded for the best presented club which was a great achievement. The U16 team has claimed the Tyrone league title and is hoping to make it a double success having reached the championship final too. At minor level many of the girls are playing senior camogie and this has been invaluable in their development. They were defeated in the semi-final of the minor championship by a strong Dungannon team. With all this hard work and success at underage the club looks to be in a good position.
The success of the club at senior level and underage has not been by chance over recent years. The club is fortunate to have access to excellent facilities provided by the local St Patrick’s GAC, and with the opening of Páirc Chormaic this has enhanced the number of training sessions and matches the girls have been fortunate to have partaken in this season. Alongside the management and facilities the club has very strong County Board support and a strong committee at club level which ensures all of the ground work is carried out.
In 2012 the tally stands at 41 County Senior Championship titles in 45 years – one of the greatest winning streaks in the history of Gaelic sport, by any club in any county. Today, it remains the flagship camogie club in Tyrone, being the only one to have played continuously throughout the last 45 years, and being well known all over Ulster and beyond. However that Ulster title has eluded the club for the past 21 years and hopefully they can put that right on Saturday afternoon in Morgan Athletic Grounds Armagh.
