Lack of match practice probably cost Eglish an Ulster Club title when they lost out to Clonduff on Saturday on a 2-12 to 1-11 score line.

The Tyrone side came up against a very talented and physically impressive Clonduff side for whom Fionnuala Carr, Paula O’Hagan and Sara Louise Griffin were outstanding .

Eglish had their own heroes too with Ciara Donnelly, Leanne Donnelly and Aisling Jordan leading from the front.

Clonduff opened the scoring with a goal from Sarah Louise Graffin after five minutes but Eglish responded positively with a goal and a point off the stick of Casey Gallagher. Clonduff hit four points in a row with centre forward Paula Carr bagging two, Fionnuala Carr hitting another and Graffin also on target.

Eglish centre forward Leanne Donnelly hit four points for her team before the break but the key score in the closing minutes of the half was a second goal from Sara Louise Graffin which sent the Down champions in leading 2-6 to 1-6 at the break.

The second half was nip and tuck with little between the sides. Scores from Leanne Donnelly and Ciara Donnelly kept Eglish in touch but the accuracy from frees of Paula O’Hagan helped keep her team in front.

With time running out a free from Leanne Donnelly caused panic in the Clonduff defence and Eglish missed a great chance of a goal. Clonduff centre back Fionnuala Carr cleared her lines and relieved the pressure on her defence. With time running out the girls in yellow broke up the field and added a further point from Graffin to seal the win and take the title.
