SFC | Fianna Win Local Derby
Sunday 07.06.2015
The second game in the double bill at Edendork was the tie of the round between local rivals Coalisland and Clonoe and it lived up to expectations before a bumper crowd with the Fianna inflicting a first defeat of the season on the O’Rahillys to go through to the quarter finals.
The Fianna were full value for their 0-14 to 0-12 victory in a fine all round team display that saw Plunkett Kane and Patrick Mc Neice kick ten points between them with Stephen McNally, Jason Carberry, Louis O’Neill and Peter Donnelly all to the fore in defence as well.
The winners were out of the traps quickly with points from McNeice, Kane and Brian Toner before Daryl Magee got Clonoe up and running with a peach from the left wing. Connor McAliskey and McNeice exchanged points before Cormac O’Hagan knocked over a long range free for a 0-5 to 0-2 lead.
A brilliant effort with the outside of the boot from Declan McClure inspired a Clonoe fightback that saw McAliskey [2] and Danny McNulty put them in front. Coalisland though finished the half on top with excellent scores from Carberry and McNeice to lead 0-7 to 0-6 at halftime.
Kane and McNeice had the opening two points of the second half before a strong run from McClure got Clonoe a much needed score. McNeice and Kane then both registered again but either side of those points Magee and McAliskey scored for Clonoe to leave it 0-12 to 0-10 with eight minutes left on the clock. When centre half back Dwayne Quinn reduced the deficit to the minimum the momentum appeared to be with Clonoe but Coalisland played controlled football that saw McNeice take his personal haul to six that included a point with his weaker right foot and they held on despite having O’Hagan sent off for a second booking, McNally producing a great block to deny McNulty late on.
