Drumquin recovered from losing a man just before half time to defeat Killyman in the first round of the LCC Junior championship game played on Sunday at Clogher  after an impressive second half showing.

Having played with the breeze The Wolfe Tones were 2-5 to 0-8 ahead but a man down for the second half . In spite of that they produced a very controlled display to see off the challenge of Killyman 2-12 to 0-12.

Both teams struggled early on with the strong breeze but Killyman struck for the first scores with points from Michael Donnelly and Enda Mc Gahan. Paul Sheridan hit the net with Drumquin’s first meaningful attack and the Tones added another 1-3 without reply  as they warmed to their task. Frankie Mc Alynn (1-1), Eoin Poyntz and Mattie Mc Dermott were the men on target for Drumquin.

With twenty first half minutes on the clock it seemed that Drumquin would establish a sizeable first half lead but Killyman outscored their opponent over the remaining minutes of the first period. Enda Mc Gahan (3), Owen O’Rourke and Caolan Morgan with the scores that swung the game very much in Killyman’s favour. Their chances were further improved when Drumquin veteran Liam Patterson picked up two yellow cards inside four minutes just before the break.

Very few outside the Drumquin circle gave them much hope for the second half but the Wolfe Tones turned adversity into opportunity and produced a stirring second half that saw them dominate their opponents and outscore them seven points to four. Sean Mc Donagh, Pierce Mc Girr, Paul Sheridan, Mattie Mc Dermott and Oisin Mc Menamin were the men who delivered the scores but even they would be the first to acknowledge the contribution of Sean Breslin, Stephen Gormley, Cathal Colton, Niall Mc Alynn and Padraig Rodgers.

Killyman lacked energy and control in the second half and never really troubled the well organised Drumquin defence. Michael Donnelly and Enda Mc Gahan (3) accounted for all four of Killyman’s second half points. A bad day was compounded with a straight red card for team captain Gerard Hughes following a tussle with a Drumquin attacker.

Final score: Drumquin 2-12 Killyman 0-12
