There was a Child Protection course held in Eglish on Tuesday past which had participants form all codes of the GAA. The course was run by Tyrone Camogie and Ulster Council Child Protection officer Kathleen Woods was the tutor for the evening. There were 30 participants which included the ‘young whistlers’ referees who attended and completed the final stage of the road to becoming a referee for the new season. There may be another course in the New Year as this one was somewhat oversubscribed. Details will be circulated to club secretaries when available.
It has been confirmed that the county senior training season will begin on 6th January in St Joseph’s College Coalisland. All players will be contacted prior to the commencement of the training to confirm the exact details. The fact that there will be a more condensed season this year places strong emphasis on the level of commitment needed in the first three months of 2013. The first All-Ireland League Division 4 fixture against Wicklow is on 24th February and all clubs are reminded of the importance of full participation at training particularly those eligible minor players. Tyrone has a strong squad with a lot of young talent coming through and now that Julie Lagan has agreed to take a more active part in the management structure for this year can only enhance the team’s chances of success. There were a lot of key players injured last year that are now on the road to recovery and Frankie Bigley, Ciara Rocks and Cara Fitzgerald are all hopeful of a return to the senior ranks.
There was some exciting news for Tyrone under 14 manager as Fionnula McGrath and her St Catherine’s College team lifted an Ulster Colleges title on Saturday past. The team played with great skill and determination and ran out easy winners on a very cold morning in Ballyholland Co Down. It’s the first time that they have lifted this particular shield since this competition was introduced in 2001 as they beat Assumption of Ballynahinch. Tyrone camogs Áine Donnelly, Alana Muldoon and Ellie Donnelly were all on the winning side. Sadly there was no luck for senior camog Maggie Hagan of Moortown as her school team St Pius X Magherafelt lost their senior B Ulster final to Loreto of Coleraine.
