Ronan Mc Namee was looking forward to making his senior inter county debut against Antrim on Sunday having been named in Mickey Harte’s fresh looking starting fifteen for this second round Mc Kenna Cup game. Unfortunately for the Aghyaran defender the same night that the team was announced he suffered a serious ankle injury while taking part in an under twenty one trial game against Derrytresk. At this stage it looks like he may not play any role in the 2012 Under 21 campaign and his senior county debut remains some way off.
Mc Namee was a key figure on last year’s under twenty one side and was highly fancied to play a central role in this year’s competition. He had just made the breakthrough to the senior squad and all seemed good with life for the lad. Unfortunately the nature of sport, and football in particular is that injuries are part and parcel of the game. Hopefully for Ronan the injury does not prove as serious as feared and the recovery makes him even more determined to represent the county again at under twenty one and senior level. His absence will probably be most keenly felt by his club where he was an outstanding member of their under 21 side that lost the championship final to Beragh and a vital presence in their senior team. We wish him well as he begins the process of returning to full fitness.
