One sport however with real international appeal and one that is making waves across the country and beyond is Handball. It is one of the GAA’s fastest growing sports and as well as being played here in Ireland it is already a widely recognised International sport played in over thirty other countries. There are many tournaments held all across the world with Irish Handballers competing successfully at the very highest level presently holding several world titles at different categories.

The pinnacle for most sportsmen is to play at an Olympic Games and the rumour at the minute is that Handball could well feature as an official Olympic Sport in the 2016 Games in Brazil. Of course one form of Handball is already an officially recognised sport within the Olympics but that version of Handball is a team sport and totally different to Handball as we know and love it.

There is a huge amount of work being done to promote and develop the game throughout the country and internationally and Tyrone man Chris Curran, Handball’s key man in Croke Park, is central to all this good work being done. We wish Chris and all involved in the development of the game well and sure who knows if it ends up being part of the Olympics in 2016 Chris might need someone to help him with his luggage and I would happily volunteer for that job.
