Pomeroy are Grade Two Under fourteen League champions after themselves and Newtownstewart served up a real cracker of a final at Killyclogher this evening. The Plunketts opted to play against the wind in the first half and this proved crucial in the final outcome as Newtownstewart failed to make the best use of the elements and trailed at the break 0-4 to 0-1 with their only point of the half coming from a free in the sixth minute from full forward Niall Mc Nulty. Pomeroy’s forwards were proving very quite a handful with Kevin Corcoran (0-3) and Jude Campbell(0-1) causing major problems for Newtown.
It looked like a very difficult situation for Newtown as they turned round to face the stiff breeze however they produced a tremendous second half display and were ahead within two minutes of the restart courtesy of a Johnny Mullan goal and points from Mc Nulty and Tori Nicholas. However Pomeroy captain Eoin Quinn netted for the Plunketts and points from Ronan Campbell and Jude Campbell put them in pole position as the game entered the closing five minutes.
Newtown of course refused to accept the inevitable and pushed hard to salvage the game. Gary Duffy landed a point to narrow the gap and although Jude Campbell sent over two further points for Pomeroy Tori Nicholas scored a late goal for Newtown to leave just a point between the sides. Unfortunately for the St Eugene’s time ran out and Pomeroy lifted the trophy on a score line of 1-8 to 2-4.
