Strabane past masters of the great escape have done it again as they ensured Division Two football for 2012 following a very emphatic 2-14 to 0-06 win over a disappointing Dungannon Clarkes today at Greencastle. This time last year the Sigersons clung onto Intermediate football by the skin of their teeth following a narrow extra time win over Drumquin.

There was no such nail biting needed today as they produced one of their best displays of the season with fine performances in defence from Kieran O’Kane, Martin Mc Nulty and young Adam Mc Ginley who had an outstanding game against former county star Ger Cavlan. Up front JP Gallagher was in sublime form while Michael Etherson showed he is a player with great potential. Corner forward Brendan Mc Laughlin finished with 1-05 and it was his goal in the third minute that gave his team the perfect start. Strabane were hugely committed throughout and The Clarkes struggled to live with their pace and commitment. Centre back Terry Mc Intosh was replaced in an attempt to shore up the defence but it made little difference as Strabane led 1-07 to 0-03 at the break.

The introduction of Kiefer Morgan and Sean Molloy helped produce an improved display from Dungannon but too many of their attacks floundered through going for goals from early in the second half. As they continued to push for scores they were vulnerable to the counter attack and on one such occasion Strabane got the second goal of the game which ended the match as a contest. A lofted sideline ball from Warner Mullan was punched to the net by lively corner forward John Mc Laughlin to put the division two team 2-10 to 0-04 ahead and even though there were still twenty minutes left that score signalled the end of Dungannon’s hopes.

The Clarkes landed a couple of late points from Kiefer Morgan and forced a great save from Strabane keeper James O’Reilly but they were a well beaten side on the day. This result confirms Strabane’s place in Intermediate football for next year while the Clarkes will continue to rebuild but will do so in Division Three.
