Carrickmore had to pull out all the stops to get past a gallant Edendork side in the opening round of the senior championship at Pomeroy on Saturday afternoon.

The St.Malachys were the better side in the first half and they will feel that they should have been further than three points in front at the break. Niall Morgan grabbed a 6th minute goal and Harry Og Conlon and Paul Donaghy added points for a 1-3 to 0-1 lead. Morgan then had a chance for another goal but it was blocked for a “45” which the Tyrone keeper converted. It was a turning point in the game though and Carrickmore rallied approaching the interval with points from Conan McElduff and Barry Daly closing the gap to 1-4 to 0-4.

Daly and Donaghy traded points on the restart before a brace from the former closed the gap to the minimum. Donaghy and Morgan then put three between the sides again but back came Carrickmore through Brendan McLaughlin, McElduff and Martin Penrose to level matters going into the final quarter. A Darren McCurry free edged Edendork back in front but the crucial score of the game also proved to be the last as a Penrose goal saw it finish 1-10 to 1-8.
