St.Pat’s Maghera 3-9 Patrician High Carrickmacross 2-17

Patrician High Carrickmacross upset the formbook at Loup last night when they had a fully merited win over Danske Bank MacRory Cup holders St.Pat’s Maghera.

Man of the match David Garland weighed in with nine points for the winners, five from play, but this was by no means a one man show as they recovered in style from a poor start.

Maghera led by two points after a first half that swung one way and then the other. It was 0-2 apiece after seven minutes with David Garland getting both points for the Monaghan lads but then Maghera took control.

Larry Kielt, Tiarnan McHugh and Kielt again all pointed before a twenty metre free from Ferghal Higgins was fumbled on the line and ended up in the net. Trailing 1-6 to 0-2 Carrickmacross had it all to do but they staged a stirring comeback.

Dean Connolly and Garland had points either side of a Sean Burns goal as they closed the gap to two. Moments later though Alex Doherty blasted in a superb goal for Maghera and they looked to be in control again. Burns and the superb Garland though closed the gap at the break, 2-6 to 1-7.

The second half was only seventeen seconds old when Sean McEneaney found the net and the winners never looked back. The same player tagged on a point before Garland and defender Tiarnan McCourt left four between the sides.

Richey Mullan then ended a twenty minute barren spell for the holders with a point but Carrickmacross continued to be the better side. They had keeper Thomas Marron to thank though for two superb saves to keep Maghera at bay.

Garland landed an outstanding point from the wing and when his long range free dropped short the influential Andrew Woods got on the end of it to punch over.

Burns then landed a brilliant point from a side-line ball before Maghera had full back Odhran McGill straight red carded. Doherty converted an injury time penalty but Carrickmacross had the final say through Connolly.
