Carrickmore 8-8

Errigal Ciaran 4-8

A first half scoring blitz laid the foundations for Carrickmore’s first Grade One minor championship win in twenty years. The victory brings to an end Errigal Ciaran’s unbeaten championship run that had gone on for five years.

This Errigal side should not feel too disappointed with the outcome as they contributed handsomely to an outstanding game where both teams showed off their talents and their skills to the fullest. With first half goals from Alanagh Mc Callan (2), Caitlin Gormley and Clodagh Munroe Carrickmore opened up a half time 4-6 to 2-1 lead. Errigal did enjoy considerably more possession after the break and an increased number of scoring chances but it was Carrickmore’s night as the club added the minor championship title to the Intermediate one they won at the weekend.

Errigal’s Eimear Corrigan, Ellie Mc Namee and Emille Loughran worked hard throughout but Carrickmore had more strength in depth and a bit more quality in key areas. The Errigal girls shone in the third quarter outscoring Carrickmore by five points and narrowing the gap between the teams to six points. However goals from Munroe and Sorcha Gormley as well as a penalty save by keeper Aoibh Kerr ensured the title went to Carmen.

Carrickmore hit seven first half wides in a dominant half. Mc Callan fired in an early goal and Meave Mc Crystal teed her up for a second after the first water break as Munroe and Gormley added points.

Corrigan tagged on 2-1 before the break although she and a hardworking Errigal found Carrickmore difficult to break down. Marie Slane and Clara Gormley maintained control at the back while Munroe and Caitlin Gormley found  the net before the interval.

After an early Kelly Mc Caffrey point for Errigal, Mc Callan completed her hat trick before the holders took control. They hit a series of wides but Corrigan and Aoife Horisk goaled as Mc Namee and Mc Caffrey added points.

Munroe scored a settling point for Carmen to stretch the lead to five as Horisk and Mc Namee tagged on points with five minutes left. Gormley sent Munroe in for a late goal and Kerr saved Horisk’s late penalty as Gormley wrapped up the scoring with a stunning individual goal. The young star collected the ball on her own 45 metre line, running through to finish to the net to round off a great personal display.
