Donaghmore Retain Minor League Title
Donaghmore Retain Grade One Minor League Title
Donaghmore retained their Minor League Grade 1 title but only after a titanic battle with an Eglish side that played the shirts off their backs before losing out after extra time 2-20 to 1-17.
This was a pulsating game that ebbed and flowed and kept the huge crowd present on their toes throughout. There were superb scores, great saves, near misses and serious intensity from the two sides as both teams served up a game worthy of a final.
Eglish began well with Turlough Muldoon, Ronan Bradley, Caolan Donaghy and Sheehan Fay carrying the game to their much vaunted opponents. With the first half drawing to a close Eglish looked well placed leading 0-7 to 0-6 but with Conor O’Neill and Noah Grimes simply outstanding Donaghmore created a goal chance and James McCann got the score that sent them in at the break leading 1-6 to 0-7.
The second half produced more excellent football with both sides enjoying periods of dominance and bodies being put on the line all over the pitch. The game remained tight but it looked like Donaghmore had snatched the win when a superb 45 from goalkeeper Conan Mc Garvey put them in front with time almost up. Eglish did not panic however and when they were awarded a free deep in added time the outstanding Muldoon converted to send the game to extra time.
Donaghmore made a fast start in extra time and as limbs tired their greater quality told with Grimes in particular outstanding. He ghosted in for his team’s second goal In the first period of extra time and Donaghmore never looked back running out deserving but hard fought winners.
