Drumquin Defeat Rock To Claim Grade 3 U19 Title
Drumquin and Rock produced a high quality and high scoring u19 Championship final before the Wolfe Tones emerged triumphant on a score line of 5-16 to 1-17. Oisin Gormley top scored for the winners with 3-7 but this was no one man show with everyone from goalkeeper Malachai Donnelly to corner forward Cameron Donnelly playing their part.
Rock more than played their part as they recovered from falling eleven points behind early on to reduce the gap to three points at the break. Team Captain Odhran Nugent, defenders Daniel Mc Closkey and Martin Ward, Peter Loughran and Callum Mc Creesh carried the fight to their opponents throughout the game.
Gormley led the line superbly for the Tones and with Finnan Patterson, Joe Mc Girr and Finucane Glackin keeping the forward line well supplied with ball they soon built a substantial lead. They bagged 3-7 in the opening thirty minutes but they were pushed hard by Rock who recovered well after a slow start.
Both sides maintained the pace after the break but Drumquin, with goalkeeper Donnelly outstanding restricted Rock to seven points while adding 2-10 to their tally. Gormley, Patterson, Sean Mc Menamin, Cameron Donnelly, Cormac Mullin and Oisin Rodgers got the all important scores that ensured the trophy was heading back to Drumquin.
