St. Ciaran’s College, Ballygawley, have certainly taken the new GAA Handball One Wall Schools initiative to the next level and their latest development has seen them recognised as a One Wall Handball Centre of Excellence.

The College, in addition to already having installed three indoor full size one wall championship courts, have now taken the innovative step of constructing an impressive outdoor permanent full size facility. This encompasses the similar design to that erected at the 2012 World Handball Championships and will provide a further two full size courts, bringing the total for the school to five championship ready courts. This certainly adds to an impressive sports facility in St Ciaran’s College which already has a 3G pitch with floodlights, 3 court sports hall, fitness suite and conference rooms.

This was officially opened at the inaugural Ulster GAA Schools One Wall Blitz finals day and saw CEO GAA Handball Ireland, Chris Curran, launch the new facility at the College. “This is certainly part of an exciting trend for GAA Handball and the platform in terms of profile enjoyed by the World Championships has seen a further rapid increase in demand for one wall handball in schools and clubs around the country. St. Ciaran’s College, who just three years ago did not have handball included in their PE curriculum, are now utilising the tremendous benefits of the sport in the school and the construction of five full size one wall championship courts, and their inclusion as a one wall schools centre of excellence, is a further massive endorsement of how our games have progressed”, commented the Chief Executive.

St. Ciaran’s College Head of PE, Mrs Bronagh Kelly, commented “The kids absolutely love handball and simply cannot get enough of the games. The addition of this latest double court in the school has been greatly received and we are delighted by the progress been made by so many of our students in what is an excellent game to play be everyone”.
