Tyrone minors are through to the semi final of the Ulster championship following a narrow but hard fought win over Cavan at Healy Park on Saturday afternoon. They finished up 1-14 to 0-15 winners but few who were at the game would have foreseen such a score especially after the start Tyrone made to the game.

By the end of the first quarter Tyrone led 0-8 to 0-1 and in truth they could have been further ahead with a couple of great goal opportunities missed. Shea Mc Dermott, Lorcan Mc Murray, Sean Corry, Sean Óg Teague and Liam Mc Geary were all on target as Tyrone produced some scintillating football.

Cavan looked all at sea with their only score coming from the boot of full forward Joshua Shehu. However from then until half time there was only one team in it as the Breffni Blues threw off the shackles and hauled Tyrone back in. Points from Odhran Madden, Nathan Quigley and Shehu gave them hope but when Tyrone got the goal their attacking play deserved to make it 1-8 to 0-5, most people present would have felt the home side looked well set for the win.

However the Cavan lads had other ideas and with Shehu and Ryan Nwaneri pulling the strings Cavan had the gap down to a goal at the short whistle with points from Quigley, Shehu and Tadgh Sheils.

Tyrone had the breeze to face in the second half and Cavan asked serious questions of them. The visitors half forward line of Sheils, Nwaneri and Madden carried the contest to Tyrone. Enda Donaghy, Davin Mc Keown, Jamie Concannon and Sean Corry did enough to help their side to victory but it was a close thing as Cavan threw the kitchen sink at them. Scores from Mc Dermott and Mc Geary helped keep Cavan at bay and Tyrone held out for a narrow win.
