Fintona Pearses 3-9

Badoney 1-9

Fintona lifted the Grade 2 minor title after seeing off the challenge of Badoney at Newtownstewart on Saturday morning on a score line of 3-9 to 1-9.

A blanket of fog made life difficult for both sides in the first half as tenacious defending made scores hard to come by. However the second half saw spaces begin to open up and with space came scoring chances as man of the match Peter Colton and Caolan Donnelly made merry. Donnelly finished with 2-2 while Peter Colton  finished with 1-5 while Eugene Colton, Owen Griffith and Conan Hegarty were among key performers for the winners.

Liam Og Mossey and Lorcan Mc Cullagh did their nest to keep Badoney in the game but they were unable to prevent Fintona claim the title with seven points to spare.

It took almost sixteen minutes until Colton opened the scoring for the Pearses before he swapped scores with Liam Óg Mossey as the game began to open up. Badoney came more into the contest during the final ten minutes of the half and points from Lucas Mc Garvey and Mossey, sandwiched between a black card for Padraig Og Mc Dermott had Badoney on the front foot.

Colton and Mossey pointed to keep Badoney ahead although the contest swung once more. Fintona hit a brace of wides followed by a well struck Diarmuid Martin point to level matters for a fourth time in the opening half.

Badoney reached the break leading by one when Mc Cullagh opted for a point when a goal chance was possibly on. He carried the ball through the centre after a great pass from Mark Kennedy his effort rose over the bar for a single point lead at the half time whistle.

The sides were quickly level after the restart when Conan Hegarty dropped over from the left. The Pearses were growing in confidence and their persistence was rewarded when Caolan Donnelly fired in his side’s first goal on thirty six minutes.

Within a minute Donnelly added a second goal. Eugene Colton and Tom Gavin combining to tee up the in rushing midfielder. Fintona pressed on and carved open the Badoney defence again and by the end of the third quarter they were nine points clear after Peter Colton hit his side’s third goal of the game.

Donnelly pointed to extend but they were rocked back on their heels when Badoney sent goalkeeper Conor Mc Aneney to full forward and immediately he was on hand to turn a high ball from Mc Garvey to the Fintona net.

A point from Hegarty made it an eight point game again but in spite of a late surge and the best efforts of Badoney the Pearses deservedly claimed the title.
