Historically Tyrone schools have done well in The Rannafast Cup, the first schools competition of the new academic year, but Omagh CBS will have to improve if they want to progress in this year’s competition having suffered a four point defeat today in their first outing of this year’s campaign. Their opponents were St Mary’s Magherafelt and the Derry lads dominated the first half but in spite of their territorial advantage found themselves only a point ahead at the break 1-06 to 2-02 with Omagh’s two goals coming from Sean Mc Kenna and Kevin Collins. The second half saw “The Convent” continue their dominance but Omagh had made one or two positional switches at the break and they began to get themselves back into the game. Substitute Paul Mc Girr, Tiernan Mc Namee, Cillian Mc Cann and Sean Mc Kenna were central to the Brothers recovery but even with this improvement they were still four points behind with seven minutes left. It was then that Omagh really showed their mettle and points from Kevin Collins, Aaron Mc Cutcheon, Ciaran Slevin and Sean Mc Gale had the game level as the clock turned sixty minutes. Unfortunately for Omagh a brace of breakaway attacks from St Mary’s saw them hit 1-01 without reply to take the two points in this Group A Round One fixture.
